Richard Parker Course In-Person
Death: Let’s Read Some Literature and Discuss
When was the last time you engaged in conversation on death in general and your own death in particular? The culture certainly does not encourage a deep examination of the closing of the circle that begins with birth and concludes with death. Tolstoy, Frost, Dylan Thomas, Tennyson, Donne and other great writers do engage in this conversation, displaying a variety of perspectives. We will read Tolstoy’s novella “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” and a selection of poems from the listed authors and others. Our six meetings will focus on gaining an understanding of what these great writers have said about death, as well as examining our own ideas and concerns. There will be some small group discussion time in each class. In addition, Richard will share ideas and questions raised by current thinkers, like Reverend John Miller, author of “The Altruistic Death,” and from the medical realm, especially from Stephen Jenkinson, author of “Die Wise.” Due to the importance of discussion for this class, there will not be a zoom option. Our meetings will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on six consecutive Saturdays beginning on October 18th (10/18 - 11/22) in the Mellon Room of the NEH Library. Please email Richard to register: rlparker78@gmail.com There is no charge for this class, although a donation to the library will be encouraged. The class size will be limited, so register early if you are serious about attending.
